This study examines Sigmund Freud’s theory of defense mechanisms and analyzes their significance within
the emotional and academic experiences of university students. Freud’s psychoanalytic model emphasizes that unconscious
conflicts, repressed desires, and unresolved childhood experiences shape individual behavior through protective
psychological strategies. In the context of student life, mechanisms such as repression, rationalization, projection, and
sublimation emerge as responses to academic stress, social pressure, and identity formation. Understanding these processes
enables educators and psychologists to better support students in developing emotional resilience, self-awareness,
and adaptive coping skills. The findings indicate that recognizing defense mechanisms enhances mental wellbeing,
strengthens academic motivation, and contributes to students’ personal development, making Freud’s insights
relevant to modern educational psychology.
