Lexicographic Features of Onomastic Units in English and Uzbek Dictionaries

Аннотация

This article investigates the lexicographic features of onomastic units in English and Uzbek dictionaries from a
comparative perspective. The study examines the representation of anthroponyms, toponyms, and other proper names in
monolingual and bilingual lexicographic sources, focusing on transliteration, etymological explanation, semantic transparency,
and cultural interpretation. Special attention is given to the role of onomastic units as carriers of historical, linguistic,
and cultural information. The research employs comparative and descriptive methods to analyze similarities and differences
in the treatment of proper names in English and Uzbek lexicography. The findings reveal that English dictionaries
tend to provide extensive etymological and historical notes, while Uzbek dictionaries emphasize semantic meaning and
cultural associations. The article highlights the importance of standardization, cross-referencing, and cultural annotations
in improving bilingual dictionary quality and enhancing learners’ intercultural competence. The study concludes that effective
lexicographic treatment of onomastic units contributes significantly to accurate translation, cultural understanding,
and the development of modern bilingual lexicography
