PERIPHRASIS AS A MECHANISM OF SECONDARY NOMINATION IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK: A COMPARATIVE LINGUO-SEMANTIC STUDY

Periphrasis is one of the productive linguistic mechanisms through which speakers conceptualize, characterize, and rename entities, phenomena, and concepts by means of descriptive expressions rather than direct lexical nomination. Although periphrastic expressions have traditionally been examined primarily as stylistic devices, contemporary approaches increasingly recognize their semantic, cognitive, pragmatic, and linguocultural significance. The present study investigates periphrasis as a mechanism of secondary nomination in English and Uzbek. The research aims to identify the principal motivational mechanisms underlying periphrastic nomination and to establish similarities and differences in their semantic organization in the two languages. The study employs comparative-typological, linguosemantic, componential, contextual, and motivational methods. The analysis demonstrates that English and Uzbek periphrastic units are motivated by several recurrent mechanisms, including metaphor, metonymy, cultural association, historical reference, evaluation, euphemization, and allusion. At the same time, the two languages demonstrate differences in the degree to which cultural knowledge, historical memory, geographical identity, and anthropocentric conceptualization participate in secondary nomination. The findings support the view that periphrasis represents not merely a stylistic alternative to direct naming but a complex nominative phenomenon at the intersection of language, cognition, culture, and communication. The study contributes to comparative linguistics by proposing an integrated model for analyzing the motivational and semantic structure of periphrastic nominations.
